Lîla have always been committed to creating opportunities for community groups, schools and the public to get involved. It is an important part of what we do at Lîla, and we are proud to say that we give as much care and consideration to the design of our participation projects as we do our professional productions.
Through our participatory work we deliver meaningful and creative experiences that encourage individuals to flex both their physical and artistic capacity to uncover value in their own creativity.
“We believe that creativity is inherent in all of us”
Within each workshop we create an environment of community and camaraderie, where the dancing becomes a vehicle for building confidence, friendships and commitment to a shared goal. This environment is set up by our practitioners through their energy and engagement with the overall group and the individuals. Our practitioners are not only skilled dancers but also able to engage with each participant to share in their experience and give them a sense of value within the process.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER
Lîla delivers a variety of participatory experiences including one-off workshops, open classes, apprenticeships and commissions. We also build bespoke projects that integrate our participants within our professional touring work. We work hard to deliver valuable experiences to all participants, regardless of time restraints, experience and skill level, and invite them to get involved in Lîla’s creative approaches to dance.

When we made The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence we set out to challenge the over-used template that participatory work is an additional event to the professional work, and discovered that with attention to communication, particularly the use of imagery and qualities in relation to action and tasks, a young dancer could find depth in their connection to the vocabulary and ideas – a connection that was in its own way professional and artistic.
The success of The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence formed the blueprint for our subsequent touring project The Deluge. In this project we deepened our commitment to participants entering the work by creating more openings for integration between professional cast and participant. Participants performed within 4 sections of the work as a result of engaged in intensive creative processes with Lîla where they responded to the narrative content of the work and formed their own unique ‘character’ within the community of performers.
