Aya Kobayashi

Aya first joined Lîla in 2010 as a dancer in Tracker, she went on to tour with them in full length productions of The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence 2012, and The Deluge 2015.

Aya is an independent dance artist originally from Japan and currently based in Glasgow. She teaches, performs and creates her own work with a variety of people and communities, it seems that the three skills link and develop with each other in her practice. Aya trained at Rambert School and worked with Yael Flexer & Nic Sandiland, Rosemary Lee, Charlie Morrissey, Lîla Dance, Gecko Theatre and BOW Collectives. She is a member of Collective Endeavours and practices improvisation performance. Aya also works extensively with inclusive companies and communities in the UK and abroad such as Anjali, StopGap, Indepen-Dance and Paragon.

In recent years her works have been developed within the collaboration with the visual art, costumes, sound and architect of site that accommodates the moving bodies. She often works with galleries such as Tate, V&A museum of Childhood and Tramway to lead the education workshops and participatory performances.  Her works have been presented in the UK and abroad at locations including The Place, Royal Festival Hall, Northern Ballet, Paralympics 2012 torch relay ceremony, Cairo, Madrid, Tokyo, Ofunato and Queretaro in Mexico.
