Creating the illusion via The Body Without Organs

In this thesis Abi reflects on her early choreographic practice of making dance work of ‘narrative texture’, that is non-linear and image rich.

She explores this specifically through the making of a dance work titled Spill, giving rich and evaluative insights into her studio practice. Inspired by her own experience of watching dance as an audience member and noticing that she ‘feels’ the performance she is experiencing, literally moving her in her own seat, she analyses how her own choreographic practice might evoke the same ‘feeling response’ from audience members. Particular attention is given to the relationship between choreographer and dancer in facilitating this process.

“I am interested in facilitating creative circumstances whereby the dancers can be moved by a sensation so their movement takes on a spontaneous and instinctive expression. When this happens the feeling of the dance exceeds the limitations of its material form and seems to have a life of its own. This is what excited me about dance making.”

The writing draws particularly on two philosophical perspectives from Susanne Langer and Deleuze & Guittari whom develop theory on the influences that art has on the mind. The inner workings of how a mind receives art and live dance performance is also analysed through research into neuroscience with particular reference to Damasio.

The writing is suitable for artists, students, teachers, scholars.
